apophasis and other fun words
In these courses I talk about some of the ideas that can, do, and will crop up in my books. While some background is enriching, too much can weigh down the pacing of a narrative, something I struggle with enough as it is. So, in forgoing my usual bad habit of overexplaining stuff regardless of context, I am putting as much related info here in a spot where I deem it appropriate. As it is out of the way, I feel no shame in stuffing the following presentations with as much background info as any given reader would be inclined to stomach and more.

The Unspeakable
There is a relationship between a lack of understanding and a need to repeat. Whether you are trying to describe the color red or the Tao that cannot be named, or that you are who you say you are, you will scrape against what is possible say. Catch something, anything in your world for which metaphor fails, which can’t even be cobbled together out of every word you know, you will after failing over and over again to say what is so, resort to endless enumeration of what is not so.
